On June 24, Mr. Li Yong, President of CICPA was elected as Director General of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) at its 14th Board Session held in Vienna, Austria. He is to take over from Mr. Kandeh K. Yumkella of Sierra Leone to become the Organization’s 7th Director General, and serve an initial four-year term. It is the first time for a Chinese mainlander to assume the head of a specialized agency in the United Nations system. Mr. Li Yong, Vice Minister of Finance and President of CICPA, has rich experiences in financial related areas.
With 172 member states, the UNIDO was founded in 1966 and became a specialized agency in the United Nations system in 1985, headquartered in Vienna, Austria. The Organization's primary objective is to promote and accelerate the industrial development in developing countries and countries with transitional economies, and to strengthen the international industrial development and cooperation.
Since its joining the UNIDO in 1973, China has been playing an active role in promoting the Organization’s development. The UNIDO has also been rendering great support to China’s industrial development by introducing advanced technologies, management experience and key equipment.
